Ceremonial Grade vs Culinary Grade vs Organic Matcha

What is Ceremonial Grade Matcha?

Ceremonial grade matcha is the highest quality and purity variety of Japanese green tea matcha used in ceremonies exceeding even organic matcha powder. Once stone ground, the difference in color is apparent. The distinct green color and frothy texture when stirred exceed both organic and culinary grade in appearance and rich flavor. Ceremonial grade matcha is made only from shade-grown baby green tea leaves, while organic consists of sun grown sometimes burnt tips, and culinary contains lower leaves and is intended for mass production. The reason that culinary grade costs more is that the leaves are hand-picked, imported, and refrigerated all the way up to consumption. Man Eating Tiger matcha offers the best Japanese ceremonial grade matcha fresh from Japan.

What do the grades of matcha mean?

Ceremonial Grade Matcha

The highest quality Japanese matcha is used in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. The matcha plant is fully shade grown and the leaf is handpicked at first harvest for its perfect vibrant green appearance from the young tea leaves. At this point of the green tea leaf’s first harvest, it’s been scientifically proven that there are the most antioxidants known as catechins in the matcha because the leaf is picked at its peak chlorophyll content stage. An added benefit of choosing ceremonial grade over simply organic is a boosted amount of L-theanine. The natural sweetness of ceremonial grade matcha means you don’t need to add any sweeteners.

Organic Matcha

Organic matcha is lower-grade matcha but still good matcha. There are fewer restrictions on the type of leaf, that it’s handpicked and perfect, it is rarely shade-grown and it isn’t always grown in Japan. Some organic matchas boast health benefits like increased l-theanine however when mixed with sweeteners it

Culinary Grade Matcha

The strong matcha taste of matcha lattes, smoothies, and baked matcha goods require a matcha flavor that stands out. Many bakers and shop owners choose culinary grade when not serving it as the traditional tea. Normally lower quality, picked after the second harvest, the culinary grade matcha has origins outside of Japan and is widely considered a lower grade due to the bitter matcha tea plant flavor shining through.

Which is the best matcha?

For daily matcha tea drinkers, it’s ceremonial grade matcha. The brilliant green color when combined with hot water and whisked is what is widely considered the best-tasting matcha in the world. When, while the lovely valley teems with vapour around me, and the meridian sun strikes the upper surface of the impenetrable foliage of my trees, and but a few stray gleams steal into the inner sanctuary, I throw myself down among the tall grass by the trickling stream; and, as I lie close to the earth, a thousand unknown plants are noticed by me: when I hear the buzz of the little world among the stalks, and grow familiar with the countless indescribable forms of the insects and flies, then I feel the presence of the Almighty, who formed us in his own image, and the breath of that universal love which bears and sustains us, as it floats around us in an eternity of bliss; and then, my friend, when darkness overspreads my eyes, and heaven and earth seem to dwell in my soul and absorb its power, like the form of a beloved mistress, then I often think with longing, Oh, would I could describe these conceptions, could impress upon paper all that is living so full and warm within me, that it might be the mirror of my soul, as my soul is the mirror of the infinite God!

O my friend — but it is too much for my strength — I sink under the weight of the splendour of these visions! A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my entire soul, like these sweet mornings of spring which I enjoy with my whole heart. I am alone, and feel the charm of existence in this spot, which was created for the bliss of souls like mine.

I am so happy, my dear friend, so absorbed in the exquisite sense of mere tranquil existence, that I neglect my talents. I should be incapable of drawing a single stroke at the present moment; and yet I feel that I never was a greater artist than now.

When, while the lovely valley teems with vapour around me, and the meridian sun strikes the upper surface of the impenetrable foliage of my trees, and but a few stray gleams steal into the inner sanctuary, I throw myself down among the tall grass by the trickling stream; and, as I lie close to the earth, a thousand unknown plants are noticed by me: when I hear the buzz of the little world among the stalks, and grow familiar with the countless indescribable forms of the insects and flies, then I feel the presence of the Almighty, who formed us in his own image, and the breath of that universal love which bears and sustains us, as it floats around us in an eternity of bliss; and then, my friend, when darkness overspreads my eyes, and heaven and earth seem to dwell in my soul and absorb its power, like the form of a beloved mistress, then I often think with longing, Oh, would I could describe these conceptions, could impress upon paper all that is living so full and warm within me.
